Narrative

The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes a living by executing hit movies for the highest pay. He soon meets his match in the form of a tough British intelligence officer who tracks him down on a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. Lynch is miscast

In The Day of the Jackal (1973), The Jackal also drives a white Alfa Romeo, albeit an earlier generation model. Graham Norton reference and guest stars: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024). TLDR: Redmayne pulls it off.

Overall, the story is a viable adaptation

Unfortunately, the leading actors are not up to par, which detracts from an otherwise impressive and high-quality production. Lynch is not in any way a shadow of himself, it’s just the high bar that Redmayne has set. The experienced actor could have done a more believable counterpart/adversary role that is needed to challenge The Jackal.

There’s a barometer of deception going on in the background the whole time

The character development seems to work, although some things are left open in the main characters’ narratives, but that’s to be desired. The locations, the variety of interactions, and Redmayne’s delivery of language and character shifts really add a special layer to the story arc. I’m looking forward to seeing how Se01 ends and how the quality of Se02 is maintained or improved.

If she does, Se02 could be quite promising

Hopefully Lynch will become less forced and give a more nuanced performance to try to match Redmayne.
