Alex de la Iglesia makes a thriller/comedy in his sui-generis style
Alex de la Iglesia’s black comedy – mostly set on the Castilian motorway and at the Hotel Marqués de Riscal – deals with a crazy road movie pace, cleverly played and delightfully entertaining. At 50, Julian (Alberto San Juan), divorced and financially strapped, uses the ‘BlaBlaCar’ app to travel to Madrid. In love with Lorena (Blanca Suárez), a regular passenger, and now he wants to take advantage of the next trip to confess his feelings to her. However, he makes the mistake of choosing the remaining residents, the annoying Rodrigo (Ernesto Alterio) and the sleazy Sergio (Rubén Cortada). So his problems begin when they are joined on the road by two strangers.
A confusing road movie combined with a romantic comedy, it is a terribly enjoyable and brightly colored film
Black comedy, confusing situations and unusual roles from the original filmmaker Álex De La Iglesia, who also wrote the screenplay with his usual screenwriter Jorge Guerricaechevarría. Álex de la Iglesia brings us a very mixed bag of strange characters, fast dialogues and absurd situations in a luxury car. De la Iglesia returns to the black comedy terrain of his previous works, focusing on the relationship between the characters outside the four walls. It can be very funny and moving at the same time, so it was the perfect combination for me. This is a unique and funny film in which Álex once again confirms his unique breathtaking and visually striking style.
A crazy road movie with a nice and attractive cast
Enjoyable interpretations from Alberto San Juan as a divorced 50-year-old man with cash flow problems who resorts to an app to share his car, Blanca Suárez as his secret love, Rubén Cortada as a good-looking, free-spirited young man and a special mention to Ernesto Alterio who steals the show as a shocked, troublesome passenger who brings about a dramatic change in the course of events. This black humorous picture was competently directed by Álex de la Iglesia, who produced his new brand of horror films, which he calls ¨The Fear Collection¨ together with his wife Carolina Bang. In fact, the character played by Alberto San Juan somewhat resembles Álex, since he is a divorced man, like De La Iglesia, who recently married a woman twenty years his junior, Carolina Bang herself; similar to Blanca Suárez and Alberto San Juan, both of whom are indeed separated by 20 years. As has become common in Álex de la Iglesia’s filmography, this newcomer oscillates between humor, thriller and suspense, in this case in the shadow of a fun road movie combined with a romantic comedy and bringing together great actors who have previously worked with the Basque filmmaker, such as Ernesto Alterio and Blanca Suárez in ¨The Bar¨. Alex De La Iglesia is a great director who has achieved a lot of success, such as: ¨Accion Mutante¨ ¨¨Dying with Laughter¨ or ¨Muertos De Risa¨ ¨Baby’s Room¨ ¨¨The Oxford Murders¨ ¨Balada Triste De Una Trompeta¨, ¨Perdita Durango¨ , among others.
Acceptable and worthy
This is undoubtedly an exciting and enjoyable film for lovers of dark humor and fans of Alex De Iglesia, the Spanish king of black comedy. Rating: 6/10. Worth watching.
