A widower and his daughter travel to the deep south of Thailand to seek help from a Muslim doctor after releasing a genie into a dilapidated house. The multicultural and multi-religious approach in Cursed Land is commendable and adds depth to the premise. As expected, Malaysian director and actor Bront Palarae gives an outstanding performance, showcasing his talent in both Malay and Thai. But despite his efforts, even his outstanding acting fails to completely free the film from its flaws. The narrative spends too much time fixating on Mit’s personal downfall and neglects more compelling aspects of the story, such as community dynamics and historical context. These elements, rich in cultural and religious interactions, are far more exciting than watching an adult man slowly descend into madness. The filmmakers missed an opportunity to really explore and expand on the multicultural elements that were already present. With a tighter narrative and a greater focus on these fascinating cultural themes, the film could have had a much greater impact. As it is, it’s certainly worth seeing, but it doesn’t live up to its potential.
