In war-torn times, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, a woman finds and saves a little girl, bringing an irreversible change in the lives of the couple and those whose paths will cross. This is Michel Hazanavicius' the first animated film.. This is by far the best 2024 release I’ve seen this year and we’re in the middle of December 2024. It tells a story set in Poland during WWII, almost like a folk tale. Most of the plot takes place in the forest so typical of the aforementioned folk tales, revolving around a couple of loggers who adopt a Jewish girl who was thrown from a deportation train that passed through the forest their. Her father abandoned her to save her from certain death at Auschwitz. I won’t go into the details of the plot so you can see for yourself, I just want to add that the film will come to a deeply philosophical conclusion. Also from a technical point of view, everything is done perfectly. The visuals of the film are superbly designed. The drawing style is just right, not too detailed, not too serious, showing mostly dimly lit scenes with dominant gray tones, emphasizing the horrors and mass destruction of the most infamous war in human history. And then the soundtrack, which is sublime: the musical score, sound effects, narration and voice acting (I’ve seen the original French version) are all perfectly suited to present this gem of a film. In conclusion, it is one of the best films dealing with the subject of racism and especially the Shoah through its artistic treatment and the story it wants to tell.
